“Digital sovereignty” has become a genuine buzzword. It turns up ever more often in coalition agreements, company brochures and AI strategy papers. But what is actually behind it?
What does digital sovereignty mean?
At its core it is about being able to control and shape your own digital infrastructure, data and technology – without depending on individual providers, particularly ones outside Europe.
Why does it matter?
Many companies and public bodies use software and cloud services from US providers. That carries risks: data is stored on servers outside the EU, may be subject to US law (the CLOUD Act, for instance) and may become unavailable in the event of a conflict.
KOSMO as a building block of digital sovereignty
That is exactly where KOSMO comes in: as an AI assistant that can be run on-premise, KOSMO runs on your own infrastructure – no dependent API calls, no data on someone else's servers, full control.
- Data stays in your own infrastructure
- No vendor lock-in
- Open-source basis – transparent and verifiable
- European language models available
