As part of the series “Success is the best security”, the event “AI for SMEs” took place on Tuesday at the Media Docks in Lübeck. Dirk Schrödter opened the event with an appeal to the roughly 175 business people present, arguing for courage in adopting new technologies. To be successful and competitive in the long term, reservations have to be dismantled.

Bodo Neumann of Grafix likewise encouraged those present to look for sensible ways of using AI in their companies.

With the aim of bringing AI applications closer to the guests, Caro and Tadeusz were on site and answered everyone's questions. With a talk on “An overview of open-source AI solutions and how to use them”, our managing director took the opportunity to present solutions away from the mainstream and to discuss how they can be used in a GDPR-compliant way.

Tadeusz contrasted various open- and closed-source applications and went into the advantages and disadvantages of each. It is often wrongly assumed that open source is less secure than other applications and not GDPR-compliant. The opposite is the case: with open source, users secure their digital sovereignty and complete data security. Open-source software offers companies the option of running it in their own data centre and can also be adapted individually to their needs. Because open-source models can draw on a worldwide community, their capability is usually many times greater as well.

  • Further advantages of open source:
  • Transparent code base
  • Collaborative further development
  • Free of licence fees
  • Open interfaces
  • Traceable development process
  • More innovation through open exchange
  • Access to expert knowledge

Many interesting conversations followed afterwards, in which the topics could be explored further. It was an extremely successful evening, and we thank the Lübeck economic development agency and the Lübeck merchants' association, and above all the curious, innovation-minded audience, for a splendid event.
